Play like a BA: ideas for virtual game night

Updated: May 1, 2020

If you're anything like my family, we love to play games: board games, card games, drinking games. You name it! It is a great way to keep ourselves occupied & connected, especially in these times of quarantine.

Now that times are changing, attending and facilitating these frequent game nights has become more difficult. We’ve learned a couple of ways to keep our ritual alive, and I figured this information would be particularly useful for those of you who want something to do with your loved ones during quarantine.

Now, start up your zoom meeting & collect your friends/family for virtual game night!! Here are a few of my favorite options if you want to up your game…

FAMILY FEUD

Recently, my parents started watching Family Feud on the regular, and it has become one of our favorite shows to watch. Game Show Network seems to be the only station we have nowadays. As much fun as it is to watch however, Family Feud is even more fun to play! Channel your inner ‘Steve Harvey’ and let’s get started.

Things you’ll need:

  1. Notepad or whiteboard

  2. Method of private communication if playing virtually (aka group chat with group members)

  3. Speaker (optional)

  4. A group of at least 5

Start off by selecting your host and two teams. The host will be in charge of the notepad/whiteboard to keep track of the answer board and number of strikes. A list of Family Feud questions/answers can be found here: https://hobbylark.com/party-games/list-of-family-feud-questions.

Now, play as usual! Each round a new set of player will go head to head to start off, and the progressing team only gets three strikes. The form of alternate communication should be used when the team sitting out is trying to steal. This way you can consolidate your answer to win in the case that the other team strikes out.

Here's a wholesome video of my family playing Family Feud with our loved ones

that are not quarantining with us. You don't have to be as cheesy as us, but just have fun with it!

Arguably, the most important part of any Family Feud marathon: the theme song!! My family can never play a round without it. Click the link here to find it online.

QUIPLASH

This game is definitely not new to the gaming sphere, as some of you might already be aware of it, but don't forget about it when you sit down for game night. Quiplash has easily become my family's favorite game to play during quarantine because it's just so easy to play virtually & you can totally customize your answers.Whether you’re playing with friends or family, this game is sure to get everyone laughing and having a good time.

Things you’ll need:

  1. Download Quiplash game to computer (linked:https://www.jackboxgames.com/quiplash/)

  2. Zoom screen share

  3. Personal devices

  4. Up to 8 players

Only one person needs to have Quiplash downloaded on their computer (p.s. It is on sale for $4.99 right now). Then each player goes to the link jackbox.tv & enters in the game code. We have a lot of fun with making up goofy names and trying to guess who answered what. With a quick three rounds, this game will have you laughing in no time. Don't just take it from me though... Try it out for yourself!

VIDEO POKER

For so long, I figured that playing poker was either a man’s game or just too complicated for it to be fun. Much to my surprise, poker is neither of those things!! Don’t let any preconceived notions about poker hold you back.

My brother taught me one night, and I pretty much got the hang of it after that. If you don’t have a pro-poker playing brother like mine, there are plenty of YouTube videos that you can watch and they’ll do the trick. Or I even suggest playing online by yourself or with a buddy at replaypoker.com. This is a great way to learn hands on because it shows you the combinations you have in your hand, AND the chips don’t mean anything!!

After you and your group of friends or family have learned the basics of the game, it’s time to transition to this app! I recently stumbled upon “Poker Face” because my family was running out of games to play. Poker is not something that can easily be played over zoom, so this app is a great alternative.

Things you’ll need;

  1. Personal devices

  2. Poker Face app (linked: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/poker-face-live-texas-holdem/id1364570884)

  3. Up to 5 players

You’re definitely going to want to bring your poker face during play because this app lets you FaceTime with the other players. Everyone can chat and play virtually all with the click of a button. This app (similarly to the website mentioned above) shows you the hand combinations you have, so it’s a great app for beginners as well! One thing to be cautious of is if you run out of chips, you will have to pay for more. So… bet at your own risk!

Cards Against Humanity

Everybody knows the popular card game: Cards Against Humanity. But did you know that you can now play it online too? That’s right! Gather some friends together and get to playing.

Things you’ll need:

  1. Go to link http://playingcards.io/ to start play

  2. Zoom screen share (optional)

  3. Up to 6 players

Click the link and find the game labeled “Remote Insensitivity.” This website allows all actions to be synchronized, and for added fun, you can always zoom with your friends/family to watch their reactions! The dark purple cards are the base cards, and the light purple are the guessing cards. You will have to manually shuffle the cards to each player, but after that, it’s identical to it’s card game counterpart. Have fun with it!

So, there ya go! Four great options to keep you busy during quarantine and stay in touch with your peers. I promise you’ll have a lot of fun with whichever game you decide to play. If you do try one of these out or have any other online game suggestion, be sure to let me know so we can chat!! I’m always available via Instagram DM (@adamsbt3).

Thanks for reading & don't forget to add some badass flare to your game!

With love, BA♡
